Underfloor heating has become a popular choice for homeowners seeking a comfortable and efficient way to heat their living spaces. A common question arises, though: can you use rugs with underfloor heating? The answer is not as straightforward as it seems — and understanding thermal blocking is the key.
Thermal blocking refers to the phenomenon where materials impede the transfer of heat. With underfloor heating it happens when an insulating material — such as a thick rug — sits on the heated floor surface and prevents heat from radiating effectively into the room.
Underfloor heating systems, whether electric or water-based, heat the floor surface and let the warmth radiate into the room. When a rug is placed over the heated floor it acts as an insulator, trapping heat beneath it and preventing it from reaching the air above — this is thermal blocking.
Reduced efficiency: the heat produced is not effectively transferred into the room, leading to uneven heating and cold spots.
Increased energy consumption: homeowners turn up the thermostat to compensate, raising energy use and utility bills — negating one of the primary benefits of underfloor heating.
Comfort levels: the floor can feel excessively warm beneath the rug while the surrounding area stays cooler, creating uneven, uncomfortable temperatures.
Thick or plush rugs are designed to insulate, so they trap heat rather than let it flow freely into the room. The thicker the rug, the more pronounced the thermal blocking.
Different rug materials have varying thermal conductivity. Natural fibres like wool retain heat more than synthetics, but both can act as insulators and impede performance.
Trapped heat can cause localised overheating beneath a rug, potentially damaging the flooring or the rug — some materials warp or discolour with prolonged exposure to high heat.
Many underfloor heating manufacturers specify that rugs should not be placed over heated floors; doing so can void the warranty.
Understanding thermal blocking is essential for getting the most from underfloor heating. Choose floor coverings that promote heat transfer and you can keep a cosy, beautifully styled and efficiently heated home.
